Jordan Sarkis

“Reflecting on “Pria che spunti”, I found that working with García’s expressive annotations pushed me to think far more deliberately about the emotional timing and colouristic detail within the aria. My approach to the expressive annotations came from a technical perspective, where I would consider keeping the tone consistent, whilst preserving the emotive directions written by Garcia. An important point I found that aided my technicality was navigating the chiaro scuro throughout the piece, where notes climbing in pitch would relax into scuro, and lower pitched notes would descend into chiaro, a brightening clarity. This would tie in with my technical process where using scuro in the top notes would help elongate my stamina throughout the long piece. This is a difference to my usual approach for a piece of this duration. An example of Garcia’s descriptive markings within the score that aided my execution of the phrase would be in bar22 where the score reads “quickly” and “freely” for a fast trill and ascend on the word ‘sentira’. The annotation of “Freely” helped me approach the phrase with, of course, freedom allowing the notes to come out clearly and efficiently.”

Thank you, on behalf of Susan Hunt and all our Library Friends, for your fascinating
presentation on Garcia and helping make our event so terrific yesterday.
Your musical performance with Anna was superb, and all our guests expressed how
much they enjoyed it. Please pass on to Anna our gratitude and compliments.

I just want to say again how much I enjoyed the concert
last Wednesday. There were so many revelations in the way you approached the repertoire, and hearing it on that instrument opened up so many new colours and agogic and inflective
possibilities. I really loved what you did

Julliard

It was a magical day, and we were inspired immensely by the work that you shared and by the beautiful music making from you, Anna and Claire. Thank you so much. My mind and ears full of inspiration from your performances at Juilliard and the research you shared– have been trying things out with Kate here, as we work on some
Schumann/Grutzmacher cello and piano pieces. Thank you for all the wonderful ideas
and research. Hope we can continue the exchange again soon.

Vaucluse House

To hear your exploration of this repertoire in that room really was extraordinary and particularly special to me because I acquired most of
those pieces from Stewart Symonds in 2016 and it was a little on the edge of our collection policy. I suspect the collection will continue
to be mined for many years to come in the most interesting of ways.
